COVID-19 has put financial strain on many people, including those planning to go to college. Parents and students have been hit hard by the virus in many ways. A local savings and loan organization is hoping to help with a special program, but time is running out to apply.
April 26 is the deadline for students to apply for Yakima Federal Savings and Loan’s annual scholarship program called Awards for Academic Excellence. There are requirements. Those who wish to apply must live in Yakima, Kittitas, Benton or Franklin counties, graduate in the top 10% of their class, and have demonstrated high moral character, hard work and ambition in during their high school career. Applicants are also required to submit a one-page letter on their future plans, school and life experiences, including challenges encountered and overcome and the impact of obtaining an award. Students can review the requirements and apply online now at YakimaFed.com/scholarship. Home-schooled students are also eligible. The scholarships are funded upon student enrollment in the fall semester following graduation. Reward checks are made payable to the school in which the student is enrolled. Recipients will be notified by June 1, 2021.
Individual prizes are $ 2,000 each. A press release states that “Yakima Federal has provided more than $ 2 million in college scholarships to local high school graduates as part of its Academic Excellence Awards program for the past 45 years.
