Fantasy Football Debate: Targeting or Fade Cordarrelle Patterson? (2022)

It’s important to consider the different perspectives of players when preparing for your fantasy football draft. That’s exactly what we’ll do today as we debate the prospects of Atlanta Falcons running back Cordarrelle Patterson.

The case of Cordarrelle Patterson

Patterson is already 31, but he has relatively little wear and tear on his body, given that last year was his first with over 100 litters. As Deebo Samuel’s ‘wideback’ hybrid, Patterson has amassed 1,166 yards and 11 scrimmage touchdowns in 2022. This year, he has a decent chance to replicate his use of 153 carries and 69 targets given the Falcons will be without RB Mike Davis (release) and WRs Calvin Ridley (suspension) and Russell Gage (free agency). As intriguing as fifth-round RB Tyler Allgeier may be, he’s unlikely to push Patterson off the field, and first-round WR Drake London is unlikely to claim the 146 targets vacated by Ridley and Gage.

The case against Cordarrelle Patterson

Cordarrelle Patterson had a fun 2021 season but will likely be a waste of fantastic 2022 draft capital. At 31, Patterson is well past the peak of RB age. The Falcons were concerned enough about his physical well-being after a career-high 205 touches last year that they let him skip spring training and OTAs. Patterson is unlikely to get another 154 carries after his rushing production completely plummeted at the end of the season – he averaged 2.3 yards per carry in Atlanta’s last four games – and he’s little likely to match last year’s 52 catch now that the Falcons have added big-body rookie WR Drake London. ADP data indicates Patterson is consistently drafted ahead of potential impact players such as Trey Lance and Rashod Bateman, and ahead of RBs with a better chance of moving the needle in fantasy such as Chase Edmonds, Tony Pollard, Rhamondre Stevenson and Ken Walker. .
