Get to know Kai Owens, the rising star of Team USA skiing

For the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, For The Win helps you get to know some of the star Olympians competing on the biggest stage in the world. Ahead of the opening ceremony, we’re spotlighting 15 Team USA athletes we think you should get to know. Next up is freestyle skier Kai Owens.

A trip to the Olympics is special for every athlete who can make it to the Games, but it’s probably even more special for Kai Owens, a 17-year-old freestyle skier who will be competing in moguls for Team USA.

Owens’ personal story is quite incredible. She was born in China and left in a town square by her biological parents before being adopted from an orphanage when she was just 16 months old. Her parents, Amy and John Owens, raised her in Vail, Colorado, and now Owens is returning to China for what she called “just amazing.”

Let’s get to know more about Owens, who is competing in his first Games.

In December, she had this to say about her trip, via The Associated Press:

“Some serious stars lined up for me to be here today. It’s hard when you’re a kid to think of being abandoned and left behind. But I found a great home, a great passion for something that I love and I have a big family.I am certainly grateful and lucky.

More from the PA after Owens was officially named to the Olympic mogul team:

“It’s come full circle when I get off that plane in China,” Owens told The Associated Press on Friday after the U.S. freestyle ski team was announced for the Beijing Games which begin next month. “When my skis hit the snow in China, it will be a really special moment for me because I will be skiing at the Olympics in my home country. It’s crazy how life works. »

It’s an apt name for Owens, who at 14 became the youngest American skier to win a NorAm moguls event.
