State Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj told a meeting of senior ministry officials that a master plan for the development of Auli as a international tourist destination is being drafted. According to the minister, the master plan will transform the hill station into a year-round tourist destination. To make it available as 365 Day Adventure Sports Hotspot, The tourism minister said arrangements will be made to ensure skiing in winter, while activities like hiking, trekking and rock climbing will be promoted in summer. Located on the road to Badrinath, one of the Chhota Char Dham pilgrimage sites, Auli offers magnificent views of the Garhwal Himalayan peaks, especially Nanda Devi, the second highest peak in the country. It lies in the Chamoli district of the state. At 2,800 meters above sea level, the slopes are flanked by deodars of conifers, oaks and apple orchards. Being a newbie in the world of tourism, Auli gained popular resort status in a short time after being a former training ground for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). Tourists are easily amazed by the thrill offered to them by the strident wind, snow-capped peaks, long stretch of snow-capped valleys and perfect skiing range. Apart from skiing, Auli also offers brilliant stretches for trekking.
The master plan to develop Auli as a favorite location for adventure sports will include the construction of training tracks for small children, as well as other improved facilities for all ages. The master plan also provides for the development of extensive infrastructure to attract more tourists. Winter snowfalls and ski championships attract tourists from all over the country to this popular ski destination in Uttarakhand. Tourism facilities in Auli were assessed by Chief State Secretary SS Sandhu last month, according to reports. The ITBP will be consulted on issues relating to the implementation of the Auli Tourism Development Master Plan.
Skiers from all over the world consider the slopes of Auli to be among the best in Asia. There are two international standard ski slopes in Auli. It also boasts of the longest and highest cable car route in Asia of four kilometers which connects Auli to Joshimath. Auli is known as Bugyal in the regional language which means meadow. It is also the gateway to the Valley of Flowers National Park, including Gurdwara Hemkund Sahib, and popular trekking destinations such as Gorson Bugyal, Pangerchulla Summit and Tapovan can be accessed via this location.
