When it comes to inheriting a rider number, it doesn’t get much bigger than that in Hawthorn.
Subiaco product Tyler Brockman will wear the famous No.33 in 2022 worn by great native and talented goalscoring club Cyril Rioli.
Rioli wore the number throughout his 189-game AFL career, which included four PM posts and a Norm Smith medal in 2015.
âIt’s obviously Cyril’s number, I’ve always admired it and I think a lot of us native boys have it,â Brockman said on the club’s website.
“It is a dream come true to wear the same number as someone who has obviously had such a great career.”
The Lions colt, drafted with the 46 pick in the 2020 national draft, played 11 games in his debut season after making his first-round debut against Essendon.
The 19-year-old has scored 10 goals for the year, including a total of three in the final round draw against Richmond at MCG.
Several WA rookies have seen their rider numbers confirmed, including the quartet of Fremantle Jye Amiss (24), Neil Erasmus (28), Eric ‘Roy’ Benning (38) and Matthew Johnson (44).
Jesse Motlop, an exporter from South Fremantle, will wear the No.3 in Carlton worn by the recently retired big club and former captain Marc Murphy.
Corey Warner, a former Aquinas College classmate in Motlop and East Fremantle racing machine, was awarded number 37 in Sydney, while Claremont and Christ Church bull Angus Sheldrick were awarded number 29.
The West Coast has yet to confirm the numbers its conscripts will wear.
