AMES, Iowa – At WHO 13 News, we often honor our elders with a senior salute. It’s a special tribute on TV news to grandparents and great-grandparents across the state. This is a special tribute to the senior class of the Iowa State University football team.
At first glance, the 7-6 record this season is a bummer, but that’s only because of a senior class who laid the groundwork to raise the bar for excellence at Ames.
The persistence and motivation that these 23 seniors used to say “Yes, we can,” when so many people have probably told them as high school kids that you can’t win at Iowa State, will continue to grow. shaking the bleachers of Jack Trice Stadium for decades. after their departure.
The 20-13 loss to Clemson in the Cheez-It Bowl stings. Should Brock Purdy have slipped instead of trying to gain extra yards before being stripped? Maybe, but isn’t it the willingness to fight for more when most would be satisfied, a trait that perhaps helped the Cyclones lift the agenda out of mediocrity?
Iowa State’s four Big 12 losses this season were also one-possession games. Did the Cyclones end up choking and wasting what could have been another season with a bowling game on New Year’s Day? Or have these seniors created a program where beating Oklahoma is no longer a surprise?
Matt Campbell and the Cyclones have played five consecutive bowl games in the past five seasons. That’s almost a third of all bowl games (17) in Cyclone’s nearly 130-year football history.
In fact, seniors Chase Allen, Jake Hummell and Eyioma Uwazurike are the first to play in five balls.
From 2011 to 2018, Iowa State never had a quarterback good enough or healthy enough to start every game of a regular season. Brock Purdy completed that streak in his sophomore year in 2019. The elder now leaves with 32 different academic achievement records, including career wins with 30.
There has been only one All-American on three occasions to wear Cardinal and Gold. It belongs to senior tight end Charlie Kolar with school tight wing records for receiving and receiving yards over the course of a season.
There are plenty of senior talents coming out of the Bergstrom football complex, including linebacker Mike Rose who is one of two Cyclones to win the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year award.
In 2020, defensive back Greg Eisworth became the first to win the Big 12 first team three years in a row. Now, high-end rookies are noticing a bridge built on these seniors’ resilience in the face of adversity. December signing period recruiting class ranks 22ndsd in the countryside. This is the highest national ranking for the program by a landslide. It is a future created by a culture, a rediscovered coherence and this terminal class.
The Campbell era began with the phrase “A storm is brewing. Starting the season in the top ten and finishing 7-6 may indicate rocky waters, but Cyclone fans should put on sunglasses as the future looks bright.
