The Pyrenees await as the race for yellow at the Tour de France heats up in week three

Aelcome to our live blog of Stage 16 of the 109th Tour de France, the 178.5 kilometer race from Carcassonne to Foix.

After Monday’s rest day – the third and final day without a saddle for the remaining riders of this year’s race – racing resumes at 11.40am (BST) with Telegraph Sport coverage set to start at 1pm.

Before taking a very quick look at today’s stage, his colleague Tom Cary toyed with the fanciful idea of how Geraint Thomas could, against all odds, win a second Tour title at Paris on Sunday.

The Tour has entered its final week with Thomas currently occupying third place on the podium, two minutes 43 seconds behind the yellow jersey Jonas Vingaard (Jumbo-Visma) and just 21 seconds behind second Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates).

The question is, does the Welshman and his Ineos Grenadiers squad protect this spot and follow the wheels, hoping one or both riders in front of them slip? Or are they risking it all for a famous win?

Thomas, who has already won the Tour in 2018 and finished second in 2019, hinted on the final rest day on Monday that he was ready to do the latter. But he stressed there was no point ‘attacking just to attack – for the TV cameras’. It had to be well thought out and worth the risk.

Here, Telegraph Sport take a look at Thomas’ options over the past week.

Despite the loss of two key teammates in Sunday’s stage, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) will wear the yellow jersey, the leader’s yellow jersey, for a fifth consecutive day.
