Young Named Academic All-American – University of Colorado Athletics

BOULDER – Graduate Student Joey Young was named to his At-Large Team’s second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America on Tuesday, continuing to add to his impressive list of academic accomplishments as a member of the Colorado Buffaloes ski team.

Young was named to the third team after his senior season a year ago, and is the sixth member of the ski team to earn All-America academic honors and is one of 67 winners in the history of CU. He is only the second two-time winner of the CU Ski Team.

Young graduated from the Leeds School of Business with degrees in accounting and finance before the start of his fifth season, which was granted to him due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was CU’s Scholar Athlete winner as having the highest GPA of all senior male student-athletes in Colorado.

Young was accepted into CU’s graduate school and worked toward a master’s degree in finance for the 2021-22 school year, earning a perfect 4.0 GPA.

On the tracks, he set new CU standards for race starts (60), finishes (49) and racked up 39 top 20s including 20 top 10s, seven top fives with three podium finishes and two race wins. He is also the first known five-time winner in the program’s history.

Young is one of three skiers to be mentioned in the first, second or third team along with Utah’s Samuel Hendry and Montana State’s Riley Seger. To put into perspective just how difficult it is to make the CoSIDA All-America At-Large team, more than 400 skiers nationwide boast a cumulative GPA above 3.5 and have been named in the National All-Academic Ski Team by the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association. . Team At-Large is comprised of 26 NCAA-sponsored sports and District 7 includes all institutions from eight states, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas. Literally thousands of student-athletes are academically eligible for the at-large program each season.

Young joins Kelly McCann (1996), Ondrej Valentina (1998), Linda Wikstrom (2000), Andreas Haug (2013, ’14) and Rune Oedegaard (2015) as Academic All-Americans for the Buffs ski team.
